Why Study Ice Cores

An LC-130 waits to be loaded on a skiway
in East Antarctica.

Once on the ground, the pre-chilled plane is quickly loaded with ice cores and other cargo. The plane will fly to an intermediate staging point where the the ice will be held in freezers until being sent back to the U.S. either by ship or by commercial charter.
